Gambling is a cost, not an income.

Every game at every operator on this site is built with a house edge, so over time the expected result is a loss. None of the tools below changes that. What they do is keep the loss inside a number you picked while you were thinking clearly, rather than one you land on mid-session.

The tools every UK-licensed site has to offer

These are conditions of holding a UK Gambling Commission licence, not favours. All five operators compared on this site carry them, and each one is set inside your account rather than requested from support.

  • Deposit limitsA cap per day, per week or per month. Lowering one takes effect straight away; raising it has to wait out a cooling-off period, which is exactly the point of it.
  • Loss and stake limitsWhere an operator offers them, these cap net losses or total stakes instead of money added — more useful than a deposit cap if you tend to keep playing with winnings.
  • Session remindersA prompt at an interval you choose, showing how long you have been playing and what has happened. Easy to dismiss, still worth switching on.
  • Time-outsA short break from one operator, from 24 hours up to six weeks. The account is closed to play and marketing stops for the duration.
  • Single-site self-exclusionA minimum of six months at that operator. The account is closed to play, marketing is removed, and it cannot be reversed on request during the period.
  • Marketing opt-outYou can refuse gambling marketing entirely, and a licensed operator has to honour that — including email, text and push notifications.

GAMSTOP, in plain terms

GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. It is free, registration takes a few minutes, and it applies across every operator holding a UK Gambling Commission remote licence — which includes all five sites compared here and several thousand more.

You choose the length: six months, one year or five years. It cannot be lifted early, and it does not simply expire — once the minimum period is over, the exclusion stays in place until you contact GAMSTOP yourself and wait out a seven-day cooling-off period. That design is deliberate, because the moment someone most wants access back is rarely the moment to grant it.

Two things GAMSTOP does not cover: gambling in a betting shop or casino in person, and sites without a UK licence. Anything advertising itself as accepting players who are registered with GAMSTOP is, by definition, operating outside UK regulation and outside the protections that come with it.

Signs worth taking seriously

None of these is proof of anything on its own. Several of them together, over a few weeks, is the pattern people describe afterwards:

  • Sessions running well past the point you meant to stop, often because a limit was raised while playing.
  • Depositing again straight after a loss to get back to level — the single most consistent thread in gambling harm.
  • Keeping the extent of it from people close to you, or being vague about numbers when asked directly.
  • Money for gambling coming from somewhere it was not meant to: bills, savings, an overdraft, a loan or a friend.
  • Sleep, work or study slipping, and irritability when you cannot play.
  • Thinking about the next session during the parts of the day that used to have nothing to do with it.

Blocks that sit outside the operators

Two layers of protection have nothing to do with the casino at all. Most UK banks now include a gambling block in their app, which refuses card payments to gambling merchants; several apply a delay of 48 hours or more before it can be switched back off, so it is worth checking how yours behaves before you rely on it.

Separately, blocking software covers the devices themselves rather than the payment. BetBlocker is free and volunteer-run; Gamban and Gamblock are paid, and are sometimes provided at no cost through treatment services. All three block gambling apps and websites rather than transactions, which makes them a useful companion to a bank block instead of a replacement for it.

Free help in the UK

The National Gambling Helpline is on 0808 8020 133. It is free from UK landlines and mobiles, open 24 hours a day, and run by GamCare, which also offers live chat and structured treatment. You do not need a diagnosis, a referral or a plan to call — people ring to talk about someone else's gambling as often as their own.

In England the NHS runs specialist gambling clinics, with referral routes that GambleAware's service directory sets out alongside local and national support across Scotland and Wales. Gordon Moody provides residential treatment for severe cases, and GamAnon supports family members rather than gamblers.
